In theory the current EU guidelines are supposed to protect everyone who is fleeing from Ukraine. Unfortunately the reality is that a significant group of stateless people is not protected by the directive. The European Network on Statelessness published an ‘Ukraine Briefing’, responding to the most pressing questions around the Ukraine war and its effect on stateless people. #1 Make use of your right to legal assistance. Ask (only!) official local guides for ways to register, this will be a prerequisite to get further assistance and social benefits (food, health care, etc.)
#2 If you have a permanent residency: Don’t apply for asylum but make use of the new directory: Temporary Protection Directive. This will allow you to get a 1-year residency and work allowance.
#3 If you are not recognised as stateless or have a temporary residency: You will most probably have to apply for asylum. Please make sure to get legal assistance for this process. You can ask for support at the legal authorities or get in contact with organisations who support stateless people in the country. You can find a list of those organisations in the Statefree Community or ENS website and further information here: ecre.org.
