Hey everyone,
My name is Elisa, and I am a student at the Cologne International School of Design in Germany. For a university project, I am planning an audio-visual exhibition that will focus on personal voice messages collected from people in a variety of countries. These messages will reflect everyday worries or joys, and my goal is to identify and highlight the similarities within these experiences by juxtaposing them. The motto of the exhibition is: "Let’s focus on what unites us, not what divides us."
For several years now, I have been deeply concerned about the political and social developments in Germany. It seems that xenophobia and the rejection of refugees have become alarmingly normalized. People seeking protection are often denied the dignity and empathy they deserve due to their traumas and life stories. This situation is difficult for me to understand, and through this project, I want to contribute to fostering a shift in perspective and breaking down prejudices.
I am convinced that as a society, we can develop greater understanding for one another if we make the parallels in our lives visible. Personal voice messages, which often capture the deepest emotions and thoughts, are an honest and intimate medium to achieve this.
My goal is to create a space where people can come together, share memories, and break down prejudices. I want to demonstrate that, despite our different backgrounds, we all go through similar phases and challenges that connect us in a universal way. I don't want to say with this work in any way: "We are all equal", because due to inequality of opportunity, systematic exploitation and drastic personal situations, we are obviously, sadly not. But I want to show that living together can only really work if fears of contact are reduced.
I am now looking for people who are willing to share their anonymized voice messages or personal experiences with me, or for tips and connections that could help me realize this project. I am particularly interested in contributions from individuals who have had to flee their home countries or are currently still in countries where people are fleeing from.
If you are interested in participating or know someone who might want to get involved, I would be thrilled to hear from you. Any support is greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time and interest!
Warm regards,
Elisa Hoffmann
