Together with the European Network on Statelessness (ENS) and Apatride Network, we’ve published a new Guide to Collaborative Advocacy on Statelessness. The Guide grew out of many conversations around advocacy, participation and accessibility — and around the question of how advocacy spaces can become more meaningful, collaborative and inclusive for people affected by statelessness. It includes practical tools, examples and principles for people who want to engage in advocacy, as well as for allies and institutions working alongside stateless communities. We all agree that people with lived experience are experts in their own realities and should be centred in changemaking processes. We hope this Guide can offer a useful framework and starting point for building advocacy spaces that are more accessible, collaborative and grounded in lived expertise.Read the Guide here.Alongside the Guide, we also want to share a short video in which representatives from our teams and community speak about w
We’re excited to share our Conference Outcomes Report following our joint conference Statelessness & Innovation: Building Power Through Collective Action, hosted by the European Network on Statelessness (ENS) and Statefree e.V. in Berlin in November 2025.Over three days, more than 100 participants – including people with lived experience of statelessness, community organisers, NGOs, lawyers, researchers, policymakers, institutions, media and allies – came together to share expertise, reflect on challenges, and explore how we can collectively drive change. The conference was shaped by many powerful moments: new connections, insightful workshop discussions, co-developed recommendations, and opportunities for future collaboration, enriched by music, dance and poetry. Our new report brings together key outcomes from the conference, as well as the learnings, actions and recommendations that will guide our collective work moving forward. Please see the report below or read it here on our we
We are very happy to share the publication of the paper: Hierarchies of Statelessness in Germany. The paper examines how the category of “undetermined nationality” creates a hierarchy within statelessness in Germany. Many stateless people already know this from their own experience. Not everyone who is stateless is treated in the same way.In Germany, some people are officially recognised as stateless, while others are classified as having an “undetermined nationality”. Although this may appear to be a technical distinction, it often results in very different levels of access to rights, protection and long term stability. For many people, this uncertainty also affects their sense of security, belonging and mental wellbeing.Based on eight in depth interviews with people with lived experience of statelessness in Germany, the paper explores how legal categories and administrative practices can shape everyday life and wellbeing. At its core, the publication argues that statelessness is not sim
Poem Lynn - To be stateless means To be stateless meansyour name is a ghost in a limbo A whisper in the Bureaucracy To be stateless means your nationality is written in parentheses On paper that says: you don’t exist, or maybe “XXX” I am a child born between borders,a child with no home in ink, no country in stamp no “where are you from”that fits on a form To be stateless meansyou taste freedom for a moment, A plane might lift you, A visa might open - only ti have it yanked away. You are denied in the continuity of breathing, your breath is questioned. Who are you? From where? Do you belong? My mother used to whisper“Hold your breath until we pass”The borders… Maybe? I learned early that even air could be a privilege I have carried the silence of waiting roomsletters that never arrive dreams that always need proof They say “be patient” But patience has never been a country that would let me in. I have felt anger like firein my throatRising Burning Bitterness in my bones for ever

We’re thrilled to share that Statefree has finally launched its first-ever community-driven campaign, and we’d love for you to be a part of it! What’s the Campaign About? This year marks 70 years since the 1954 UN Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons. Back then, 98 countries came together to create 43 articles aimed at ensuring basic human rights for stateless individuals. Today, 99 countries have ratified the convention.Yet, statelessness remains a global human rights violation. Over 15 million people worldwide are stateless, living without legal recognition, access to basic rights, or a place to call home. Despite decades of promises, progress has been slow, and the voices of stateless individuals remain unheard.Through this campaign, “70 Years, 70 Voices,” we’re amplifying the voices and perspectives of 70 stateless individuals from around the world. Their experiences and statements shed light on 70 years of limited progress. Our goal? To raise awareness, foster understandin

Deutsche Version untenThe way in which statelessness is portrayed in the media is often simplistic, while the legal aspect of statelessness is often very complex. Statelessness also has an emotional dimension that needs to be taken into account - our Statefree Community Lab emotion. The Statefree Community Lab is an open invitation to all people with lived experience of statelessness to come together, exchange and build community. The weekend was filled with personal stories, networking, bonding, and collectively discussing what we want to achieve next year. Envisioning a statefree futureRecognition is a central aspect of statelessness. Especially in Germany, where the path to getting one’s status as a stateless person recognized is often impossible, recognition is crucial in order to have access to basic human rights and live a life in dignity, peace and self-determination.That’s why the focus of the Community Lab was on recognition: How do we envision a statefree future, in which rec

(https://www.meinbafoeg.de/bafoeg-als-auslaender/)Das ist schon vom Ansatz her falsch. At least half a million people in Europe are stateless. The true number of those affected is undoubtedly much higher due to a lack of reliable data. Stateless people are denied fundamental rights that many of us take for granted: to go to school, to work, to marry, to register the birth of a child, to ‘legally exist’. But statelessness is preventable.Together with the European Network in Statelessness and the Robert Bosch Foundation we are co-hosting the event and panel discussion: Building alliances of changemakers: Working alongside stateless communities to end statelessness in Europe The event will address statelessness in Europe and focus on how organisations and changemakers can build inclusive alliances to address the issue across the region. The event will take place on 28th November at Robert Bosch Stiftung, Französische Straße 32, 10117 Berlin (map)10:30 – Registration with coffee11:00 – Main event and discussion13:00 – Networking lunch14:00 – End of eventPlease register onlin

Joint Statement by the MENA Statelessness Network (Hawiati), European Network on Statelessness, and Statefree on why statelessness cannot be ignored in the violence in Gaza and Israel We issue this statement as three civil society actors working with people affected by statelessness in the region and in Europe.First and foremost, we want to express our solidarity with everyone impacted, particularly those with family or friends directly affected by the appalling developments on the ground. We have been deeply saddened by the recent and ongoing violence in Gaza and Israel. We reiterate calls for an immediate ceasefire, lifting of the blockade of Gaza, and for all actors to respect international law to avert further loss of civilian life and humanitarian catastrophe. As is often the case, civilians are bearing the brunt of this violence. It is imperative to urgently end the present violations of human rights. Collective punishment of civilians can never be tolerated. At such moments of e

Hello Forum members! I wanted to share an opportunity I learnt about recently - a mentorship programme for people wanting to apply to Masters programmes or PHDs anywhere in the world, who have experience of statelessness or displacement. The programme offers tailored individual support in applying to university courses. Please feel free to pass on to anyone in your networks, it seems like it would be really useful! And note that the deadline to apply to this support programme is 17th September 😊 Take care,Frances
