It's our Birthday 🎉Statefree

Yay 🙌🏾!Exactly one year ago our team sat together in the early morning to launch the first ever online community for stateless people and their allies (see photo).Since then so much has happened:       👉Our team has grown from 8 founding members to a team of more than 15 volunteers       👉Our blog pages has been viewed almost 20.000 timesWe have brought members from the online community together in the offline world - not once, not twice but three times this year   And 👀❗ we have been able to gain the attention of German politicians, increasing awareness of the need for political change   None of this would have been possible without every single person that has followed and supported our journey from close or from afar! Thank you for sticking with us ❤ We can’t wait for everything that is to come!

The first day of the exhibition

Last week we celebrated the opening of the open-air exhibition Imagine by Florian Schwarz and Statefree - a photo project illuminating Statelessness. You can read more about it here.Before it started we met with some of the people portrayed by Florian Schwarz in a nearby cafe. It was a special moment for many of them as it was the first time they had been in a room where the majority of those present were stateless. For me as a volunteer at Statefree, it was amazing to be able to witness this sense of community and a beautiful affirmation of the work of our association.  Before the exhibition was officially declared open, photographer Florian Schwarz, curator Helena Vayhinger and Statefree founder Christiana Bukalo told us how the project started. They also explained why this exact location was chosen for the exhibition. My Plight while moving with hope and the mindset of a WINNET.

Hello Dear Community, I am new here and I have two amazing women to thank for connecting me to this amazing community of which I am so grateful and humble to be part of. I wanna share about my plight and I'll make it as short as possible:  I go by the name Prince Lenny Penaloza, I was stolen as a baby and trafficked from the US by a gang of women traffickersI spent and I spent some years of my childhood growing with one of the women that abducted me and the same woman I thought was my mom as a child, although she and none of the other women in her gang of traffickers looked anywhere like me because 'am black and they're not..I've been living in Germany ever since 1990 where I was abandoned and left for dead. Till this day, I still live as an Unidentified Human without any ID and as a Stateless human. Exactly eight years ago (2014) when I tried saying a little about my situation on Facebook after years of living in fear and depression , I got death threats from Racists and was even luck

“Do politicians even care?”Policy work

Politics should not just be made for but WITH stateless people - a sneak peek into our Statefree Community Lab. Stateless people usually have no influence on politics. Without citizenship there is no right to vote and therefore no way to change policy making. As if that wasn’t enough, those who make decisions - politicians and others - often make those decisions without even knowing that stateless people exist in their own country.  “Do politicians even care?” was one of the most common questions asked by stateless people when we started to share that Statefree wants to pursue changes in politics and plans to get in contact with German politicians. It is understandable that stateless people and communities are turning away and losing hope and trust in politics because of how they have been overlooked in the past. The Global Statelessness Movement - Who Are We?

The Global Statelessness Movement is a global community of stateless persons, activists, and allied organisations dedicated to the eradication of statelessness, equal nationality rights, and the human rights of stateless persons. We envision a world in which universal human rights - including the right to a nationality - are respected and upheld for all human beings. Statefree and Politics - Time to stand up for our rights!

We have a mission: the empowerment of stateless people! Our journey began with a single thought. It was important to us to create a space where affected people could support each other, exchange experiences and share their knowledge.  So, why politics? While this space can help to create a sense of belonging and to own our voice, we recently began to recognise that in our world the clocks tick a little differently. Politics decide who has access to certain rights and who doesn't. Therefore, we have decided to broaden our areas of work - and in a sense our horizons as a new organisation - and start doing policy work and what is often called political 'advocacy'.  First of all: What does advocacy mean? No - it has nothing to do with avocado. Just kidding.       “Advocacy” means to publicly support and defend a certain cause. In our case: statelessness. Hey Community!! I'm profoundly excited to have found this group. I truly hope to connect with other stateless and like-minded people. It's been an incredibly long and hopeless journey.  What this post is about: A call to action, a list of current funding opportunities & an opportunity to talk to me about our current fundraising approach - if you’re interested :) This is the sign you’ve been waiting for. There is a German saying which goes “Wer nicht wagt, der nicht gewinnt”. A quick google research says that it translates to “Nothing ventured, nothing gained” - aka if you don’t try, you won’t succeed. Hello everyone!I am really excited to announce that my first draft of my graduation project, NON-NATION, a virtual world dedicated to stateless people and people who support stateless rights is ready to debut. I would love to invite everyone for a very casual presentation (45 min) of the virtual space, its possibilities and how it might grow.Together we will add a 3D object as an example of how the space can be customised. I will guide you through how to do this. You can also think about what you might want in a place dedicated to supporting stateless rights. Dear brother, dear sister,let me share with you my long and tiring experience, forgive me if I write with simple words put down in naked frustration. Let me share part of my story, so you know what kinds of life are possible for men to live. So you know of men who belong to no country, who have less rights than a dog in Europe, who haven't, since before 2014, known a peaceful night of sleep not invaded by the fiery missiles launched at our parent's home from a roaring F-16 fighter aircraft, chasing us through the cracked grey streets of our childhood memories.I was one of the stateless in Belgium. A man, they told me, who belonged to no nation. Only GOD recognized me now.On my long walk from Stoney Greece to Belgium, I was captured near München, Germany. Fleeing from Ukraine as a stateless person

Important things to consider:  Take any (!) documents with you that prove  your identity & residency in Ukraine: Proof of registration, Drivers licence, residence permit, enrolment certificate and certificate of employment You have the right to seek protection in EU countries: The borders of neighbouring countries are open to all people fleeing from Ukraine.  Get familiar with the term „statelessness“ in other languages so that you can explain if needed. See translations here  Go to a reception centre and reach out to local NGOs who support stateless people. See a list of organisations here We imagine that a number of people in the Community might have had similar experiences in the past and maybe have insights on what to do and what to avoid when fleeing a country as a stateless person.
