Hello Community,I have a question concerning a client of mine (I am working as a psychologist). This client is currently stateless, although he has no official confirmation of being stateless. He came to Germany about 30 years ago from Aserbaidzhan - with a passport from the Soviet Union, birthplace Aserbaidzhan. Since his last passport expired he doesn’t have a valid passport - German authorities don’t want to confirm the statelessness. They want him to get official confirmations from russian and armentian consulate to prove that he is neither russian nor armenian citizen. He has a official document from Aserbaidzahn confirming that he has no aserbaidzhanian citizenship. All he wants is the official title of statelessness so that he is able to apply for German citizienship. He lives in the current situation (no valid documents) for 4 years now - which means he can’t work nor leave the country. Two lawyers who were involved in the case couldn’t help. SVR Policy Brief: Life without a passport: The situation of stateless people in GermanyThe Expert Council on Integration and Migration (Sachverständigenrat) has published a policy brief about statelessness in Germany. I am currently working on my Master’s thesis on the topic of climate change and statelessness in Europe. Hi, my name is Jessie (she/her) and I am a community ally, living in the UK. I am a trainee clinical psychologist, working in the national healthcare service and at University College London. My research team and I are running a project where we are hoping to speak with people living in the UK who are part of the statefree community and considered stateless by the UK government (or have been in the past), to understand how this has influenced their well-being or mental health. The project came about from working in mental health services and hearing from people who have lived experiences of statelessness.I’ve joined here as an ally and hope to just listen and learn, thank you for having me!

While my research is focussed on policies within the United States, I am looking to learn about global opinions towards statelessness. I am also a student finishing my Master's in Migration Studies at the University of San Francisco.My thesis work is focussed on understanding how to spur political participation in solidarity with the statefree community, as a step in the fight for citizenship for all. Dear Community,Before meeting Christiana and joining the Statefree team, I conducted research on statelessness in Germany. It was an eye-opening experience and made clear how many barriers to fundamental rights exist and how much structural change is still needed. I am happy to share that the results of my research were published in a peer-reviewed journal, which you can find here: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13621025.2022.2103972The paper argues that de facto statelessness is produced and reproduced by the German citizenship regime, restrictive naturalization requirements and inadequate administrative practices. It makes clear why a fair and transparent statelessness determination procedure is both necessary and urgent. Hello dear community, I am writing my thesis on the current situation in Switzerland on the statelessness determination procedure (SDP) or the lack thereof. I am researching what the most important legal measures are to ensure a fair procedure. Right now there are no specific laws in place regarding the SDP. The procedure currently relies on general administrative procedural law. This can lead to challenging situations in the procedure. I am focussing on the fact that, the procedure in Switzerland is primarily in written form, the standard of evidence is very high and to access free legal aid and translation assistance high requirements have to be met. If you are interested in the issue or maybe even have personal experience or knowledge I would be happy to chat and share more of my work! I learned about this platform via an online webinar of ENS (European Network of Statelessness).I am studying law in Switzerland and only learnt in a module on international migration law about the issue of statelessness. I was baffled that I have never heard of it before and moments later I was shocked, at how little interest there is for statelessness and the people affected. So the decision to write my thesis on statelessness came naturally, as I wanted to understand more about the issue. I am in progress of writing my thesis, so if you want to have a chat or exchange information I would be more than interested in getting to know some of you!

My name is Omar. I am Palestinian and now live in and study in Belgium.I grew up in southwest Palestine in what is known as the Gaza Strip. My family ended upthere because they were forced to escape Yazur, Jaffa, in 1948. My name is Alex, I am a design student in the Netherlands, and I am an ally. In my work I focus on social design, this means tackling social issues through creative thinking and making. I came across Statefree about a year ago while doing research on statelessness for my studies. Since then I've been keeping myself informed and trying to help raise awareness by organising a few lectures at my university.
